Peregrine Charities is pleased to announce 2011 grant recipients, furthering our mission of supporting research into rare pediatric diseases and helping children while hospitalized or seeking medical treatment.

St. Luke's Foundation

St. Luke’s Foundation in Cedar Rapids was awarded $44,850 for the purchase of a CinemaVision goggle system made specifically for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. Children will soon feel like they are going to the movies instead of having a medical procedure at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids thanks to this donation.

The University of Iowa Foundation was also awarded $42,210 to purchase a Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) Machine, which will advance cell-based therapies for children with many congenital and acquired diseases.

The University of Iowa Foundation received $100,000 to augment the Peregrine Charities Discovery Fund for Children’s Medicine at the UI, which was created by Peregrine Charities in 2007. The fund supports research into rare pediatric diseases by scientists at the Department of Pediatrics in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. To date, Peregrine Charities support of this research fund has totaled $500,000.
